The Institute for Respiratory Health holds its 2026 Annual General Meeting

The Institute for Respiratory Health held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Nedlands, bringing together members, researchers, board members and supporters to reflect on the past year and look ahead.

The evening began with a welcoming speech from the Chair, Dr Bob Olivier. Following this, the AGM progressed through its formal agenda, which included a report from the Director, Emeritus Professor Geoff Stewart, and a financial report from the Treasurer, Mr Michael Fay. The attendees also accepted the Institute’s financial statements and re-elected board members Mrs Melita Markey, Dr Bob Olivier, and Mr Michael Fay.

The Director’s report highlighted a strong year for the Institute. In 2025, the Institute produced 92 publications, with 70% appearing in top quartile journals, and secured $6.5 million in research funding, including $3.6 million in new research grants. A total of 141 staff, researchers, students and honorary fellows contributed to the Institute’s work across the year.

The Treasurer’s report confirmed the Institute remains in a sound financial position, reporting a surplus for the 2025 financial year with total revenue up by more than 15% compared to the previous year.

The evening also celebrated the achievements of the Institute’s researchers and staff, with several awards and fellowships recognised across the year. Among the highlights were Professor Gary Lee’s Lung Health Legend Award from Lung Foundation Australia, Associate Professor Vidya Navaratnam’s Fukuchi Award at the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology Congress, and Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan’s Research Collaboration Award and Strachan Memorial Prize through the Raine Foundation.

Following the formal proceedings, guests were treated to a presentation by distinguished guest Professor Peter Klinken, former Chief Scientist of Western Australia. Professor Klinken spoke about the state of research in Western Australia and Australia more broadly, noting that while Australia produces high-quality research, the challenge lies in translating that output into real-world outcomes. He reflected on the importance of researchers working together rather than in isolation, noting that individual efforts are far more vulnerable than collective ones.

The formal meeting was followed by networking and refreshments, giving members and guests the opportunity to connect.
