The Melbourne Cup Luncheon will be in its 18th year in 2021 and is one of Perth’s largest Melbourne Cup fundraising events.
The Luncheon started as a tribute to Glenn Brown, a Kalgoorlie school boy, who sadly lost his fight to cystic fibrosis at just 15 years of age.
When Glenn was in hospital, he said he wasn’t ready to die and was worried he would be forgotten.
During his time in the hospital, Glenn met two mums who also had children with cystic fibrosis. They were so touched by his larger than life personality that when Glenn passed away, they wanted to keep his memory alive. Eight weeks later the first Melbourne Cup Luncheon was held in Glenn’s memory.
Today the Melbourne Cup Luncheon is coordinated by the Institute for Respiratory Health and is assisted by a wonderful group of volunteers.
Every dollar raised goes to funding research projects that improve the health and wellbeing of people living with cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. The Luncheon has raised over $476,000, funding nine life-saving research projects here in Western Australia.
