Get active for those living with lung conditions

Thursday, February 16, 2023 | News

Was your New Year’s resolution to get active? Or did you want 2023 to be your year to take on a challenge?

If your answer is yes, look no further as the HBR Run for a Reason is back after three years.

This popular community event hasn’t been held for three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year the HBF organisers are expecting more than 37,000 participants to join in the charity event.

In 2019, the incredible runners of Team Breathe raised almost $15K to support vital lung health research. Many of them were running for a loved one with a lung condition, or because they are passionate about supporting lung health community concerns like air pollution and ground-breaking research.

Andrea Jones ran on behalf of Team Breathe in 2019 and said she ran 4kms to get fit and healthy but also to create awareness about the amazing work that the Institute for Respiratory Health undertakes.

“Lung conditions are often seen as self-inflicted so they don’t receive as much funding as other charities,” Ms Jones said.

“But without our lungs we can’t do anything, which Covid-19 highlighted. So I think it’s important to raise awareness about the important work that the Institute for Respiratory Health does and to raise much-needed monies to better diagnose and treat lung conditions through life-saving research.

“The great thing about this event is that anyone can participate, even if you have a lung condition, you can walk at your own pace. It’s such a great feeling to be part of an event where you are raising monies to help change lives but at the same time impact your own wellbeing.”

Participants can choose from three distances a 4km run or walk, a 12km run or walk or a half marathon.

If you join Team Breathe before Sunday 5 March, you’ll get 10% off with special early bird pricing. And HBF members save an additional 20%.

Signing up for the HBF Run for a Reason for the Institute for Respiratory Health is not only a great motivation to get your training shoes on but your support will also help us to continue to help change lives for those with lung conditions.

If you’re not a runner you can still help by making a donation or by telling a friend or family member about supporting Team Breathe in this year’s HBF Run for a Reason so that we can fund ground-breaking research to find ways to better diagnose and treat lung conditions.
