New fellowship encourages global research collaboration

Wednesday, April 19, 2023 | News

The Laurent Fellowship for Respiratory Health aims to inspire a new generation of researchers to push the boundaries of respiratory research and encourage collaboration and innovation among global senior researchers. It’s been created in memory of a highly respected Perth respiratory researcher and former Director of the Institute for Respiratory Health (The Institute) – Emeritus Professor Geoff Laurent.

The fellowship aims to develop and expand upon Laurent’s passion for meaningful research, exchange of knowledge and academic partnerships, specifically within the universities he was most involved with The University of Western Australia (UWA) and University College London (UCL).

The Laurent Fellowship for Respiratory Health is available to early to mid-career scientists and senior researchers. Both will be available annually and will pay for things like travel, living expenses and accommodation.

The early to mid-career fellowship recipient will have the chance to travel internationally and conduct respiratory health research for one to three months in the highly respected department of respiratory medicine at UCL.

The senior fellowship selected candidate will receive funding for two to four weeks to travel to UWA or UCL. The aim of the fellowship is to encourage senior researchers to work collaboratively and share vital research knowledge.

Emeritus Professor Geoff Stewart, current director of the Institute and a close colleague and friend of the late Geoff Laurent, said, “The Laurent Fellowship is a fitting way to honour Geoff’s memory.

“The collaborative nature of the fellowship encourages diversity and innovation and will build strong relationships between the different institutions.

“It will be a unique research learning opportunity for those who are selected.

“Ultimately, we hope it will help to advance research in the fight against lung disease to help improve people’s lives.”

The fellowship has been created thanks to a group of dedicated friends and longstanding scientific colleagues who wanted to ensure Geoff’s legacy would not be forgotten.

Applications for 2023 close on Friday 26 May.
