Nedlands nurse leader Sue Morey named 7NEWS Health Hero for lifetime of service
Nedlands-based respiratory champion Sue Morey has been named the 7NEWS Health Hero at the 2025 WA Health Excellence Awards for her incredible contribution to lung health over five decades.
Sue has dedicated her life to helping people breathe easier. As a nurse leader and long-time supporter of the Institute for Respiratory Health, based in Nedlands, she’s improved care, driven vital research and inspired generations of health professionals.
She’s spent much of her career at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital caring for patients with serious lung conditions like cystic fibrosis and mesothelioma. Her impact was officially recognised in 2004 when she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal.
At the Institute for Respiratory Health, Sue has played a key role as a board member, chairperson and now Patron. She’s helped raise funds, support research and connect clinical trials with the people who need them most.
Lung transplant recipient Caz Boyd, who nominated Sue for the award, said Sue’s care went far beyond the hospital.
“Sue saved my life when I got pneumonia after my transplant. She made sure I was looked after in every way,” Caz said. “She’s not just a nurse, she’s a force for change.”
Sue’s story is now the focus of a book, Making a Difference: The Life and Career of Sue Morey, which shines a light on her 50-year journey in respiratory care and advocacy.
The WA Health Excellence Awards recognise those who go above and beyond to improve health care in WA. Sue’s win highlights the power of compassion, dedication and community in changing lives.
This recognition reflects what many have known for years – Sue Morey is a true health hero. And a huge congratulations to all the finalists and winners on the night.
